By Bruce Z. Matakonis

Continuous itching can be the reason behind a good old case of dandruff. However, at times, it isn't the sole reason. If you find yourself itching much more than normal, you may be experiencing scalp psoriasis. Be careful with the way you deal with your hair and scalp. What is scalp psoriasis and its causes?

Usually it's on the scalp, and also the flaking could be annoying. Its gravity can be mild with only light scaling. It might also be severe with thick plaques on the whole scalp. It may spread beyond the hairline and on the forehead as well as the back of the neck, at times to the cheeks or around the ears.

Seborrheic dermatitis may seem similar to scalp psoriasis, but the psoriasis is powdery with a silvery sheen while dermatitis reflect yellow and greasy substance. Nevertheless, psoriasis isn't contagious but it could affect the personal image and self confidence of the person. Genes and environmental factors are mentioned to be the causes of scalp psoriasis, and other risk factors include weight problems, HIV, smoking and stress.

Exactly what treatments do you need to get rid of Psoriasis of the Scalp?

Possible treatments vary on the seriousness of the condition. For mild problems, use their products and salicylic acid. Mild coal tar medicated hair shampoos are used for treating skin lesions on the scalp. You should know that these shampoos are to be utilized only on the scalp and not on the hair.

There are occasions when physicians will inject scalp skin lesions with medications. This is best centered for mild psoriasis in only a couple of areas in order that the application may be better handled.

Average to severe need distinct therapy plans prior to deciding to look for the one that works well. There is generally crusting of the scalp for moderate to severe problems, the lymph nodes in the neck are enlarged where a candidiasis may be possible.

Your physician might have to suggest an antimicrobial treatment. Sometimes, a deliberate medication through mouth or injection is the most suitable. If the response is very poor, there might be a necessity to combine or replace it with another method of treatment.

The scales have to very first be softened and removed, which is less difficult for the medications to be applied and absorbed by the scalp for far better clearing of the illness. Once more, salicylic acid makes it much simpler and other ingredients can be utilized such as phenol or even lactic acid. The scales will be relaxed using a fine toothed comb or brush, where there will be a shampoo procedure to get rid of the scales with the aid of soap or shampoo. Several ingredients will have to be applied later including oils, lotions, ointments or perhaps petroleum jelly while your scalp remains slightly damp.

The petroleum jelly must be employed with cotton balls and you will have to protect your ears so that nothing leaks into them throughout the entire procedure. You need to apply medications very carefully. The ingredients, if not regulated, might cause irritation of the skin and damage hair shafts. What's worse would be that it may lead to hair thinning. An oil or even lotion can also be rubbed onto the scalp to at least lock in moisture. Sometimes a shower cap can boost a medication's effectiveness, but only a physician can offer the authorization.

Itching may be reduced with moisturizing hair product or after shampooing to at least offer momentary relief. Now is the time to avoid working with hot tools for hairstyling in the meantime. Also, wet towels and cold packs can be used to relieve the itching. Menthol and other shampoos may help too.

Before anything else, you ought to consult with your doctor or a dermatologist just what alternatives you have and what must be done so that you are not self-medicating in the dark. Even more importantly, please do not panic! There are various completely natural options and home remedies available that won't cost you a lot of money!
